From Prez-Neal
Hello All:
I was able to attend this morning's meeting of the Ventura County Planning Division in which they approved the Caltrans application for improvements to the 101 freeway, which includes the HOV (carpool) lanes, moving the bike path to the ocean side of the highway (making a Class 1 path), with all the improvements. Of course there are still some folks trying to block the project, but I don't see any real chance of that. Some of you remember attending the Caltrans presentation at our monthly meeting a couple of years ago. The Surfrider foundation and a few Mussel Shoals residents are not happy, but you know you can't please everyone...
The project is not perfect, but at least what they are doing for cyclists overall is pretty safe, except of course when you have a large event (ie. Cool Breeze century, etc.), it could be a bit "crazy." Check out the Ventura County planning commision website and you can review the info, or Caltrans District 7 from the state... they have a little video simulation to give you an idea of what it will all look like. It is supposed to be a 10-foot wide, 2-way bike path, with open railings between the bike path and the freeway, and open fencing to see the ocean. There will be sound walls around Mussel Shoals, and a safer crossing for the bike path (with stop signs for everyone).
The project is part of the California Coastal Trail, and will cost somewhere over 120 million dollars, covering at least the Santa Barbara and Ventura county portions... with the La Conchita/Mussel Shoals area (from Bates to just south of the Mobil Pier) costing around 27 million...
Construction is scheduled to start in March of 2011, and take approximately 4 years.
See you on the road! --Neal

The Welcome Return of the Bicycle

The bicycle has many attractions as a form of personal transportation. It alleviates congestion, lowers air pollution, reduces obesity, increases physical fitness, does not emit climate-disrupting carbon dioxide, and is priced within the reach of the billions of people who cannot afford a car.Bicycles increase mobility while reducing congestion and the area of land paved over. Six bicycles can typically fit into the road space used by one car. For parking, the advantage is even greater, with 20 bicycles occupying the space required to park a car.
