Gov. Brown vetoes the 3 ft. Law citing:
"In his veto message Brown lauded the effort to specify a safe passing distance as a (needed and clear" improvement. However, a provision to require vehicles slow to 15 mph when passing cyclists sharing the same lane on some streets gave him pause. Brown cited "legitimate concerns" raised by Caltrans and the Highway Patrol."

Dear Ventura Bike Union,
First things first, we're working on improving our outreach, so that you know what's going on, and get meeting notices in a more timely manner. There's just SO much going on, it's getting hard to do. WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Ways to Help:
Please drop us a note if you are interested in joining a team to work on any of these projects from tonight's meeting:
1. We have a 30-day opportunity to increase the budget for bicycle improvements across Southern California. If you can help get people to sign petitions, etc. – please reply to this e-mail.
2. We will be partnering with the City of Ventura, for our very first bicycle trip count. If you'd like to be part of that critical data collecting effort – please reply to this e-mail.
3. We have some grant funds to do a city-wide ad campaign in Ventura to help teach car and bicycle drivers how to share the road. If you are artistic, into marketing, have a great sense of humor, like to educate about bikes, or just want to be part of this effort – reply to this e-mail.
4. We're looking at doing a cross-city ride, possibly quarterly to connect the East side with the West side. Police escort, food at the end, 10 mile ride. If you'd like to help organize that in any way, please reply to this e-mail.
5. We're forming a regional bicycle coalition for Ventura County, including possibly SB and SLO. If that's the kind of thing you dig – reply to this e-mail.
Our Mission is to address climate change by promoting a green economy and sustainable lifestyle through local community action, education, effective public policy, and an inspiring proactive vision.

The Dutch Way: Bicycles and Fresh Bread
To give a small but telling example, pointed out to me by my friend Ruth Oldenziel, an expert on the history of technology at Eindhoven University, Dutch drivers are taught that when you are about to get out of the car, you reach for the door handle with your right hand — bringing your arm across your body to the door. This forces a driver to swivel shoulders and head, so that before opening the door you can see if there is a bike coming from behind. Likewise, every Dutch child has to pass a bicycle safety exam at school. The coexistence of different modes of travel is hard-wired into the culture.

From Prez-Neal
Hello All:
I was able to attend this morning's meeting of the Ventura County Planning Division in which they approved the Caltrans application for improvements to the 101 freeway, which includes the HOV (carpool) lanes, moving the bike path to the ocean side of the highway (making a Class 1 path), with all the improvements. Of course there are still some folks trying to block the project, but I don't see any real chance of that. Some of you remember attending the Caltrans presentation at our monthly meeting a couple of years ago. The Surfrider foundation and a few Mussel Shoals residents are not happy, but you know you can't please everyone...
